IDEXX turns analyzer placements into a 2026 guidance lift

Healthcare By Ada Torres 4 min read

IDEXX Laboratories has raised its 2026 revenue and earnings outlook after reporting 10% third-quarter revenue growth and an 18% rise in diluted EPS. The upgrade came alongside rapid adoption of its inVue Dx analyzers, although acquisition costs prompted a lower full-year operating margin forecast.

  • US$1.214 billion quarterly revenue, up 10% reported and organically
  • CAG Diagnostics recurring revenue increased 11% reported and organically
  • More than 1,900 inVue Dx analyzers placed during the quarter
  • 2026 revenue guidance midpoint raised by US$32 million
  • Operating margin outlook trimmed because of acquisition-related impacts

Diagnostics growth pushes IDEXX to a guidance upgrade

IDEXX Laboratories (NASDAQ:IDXX) has raised its 2026 revenue and earnings targets after a quarter in which the core veterinary diagnostics business continued to outpace the company’s broader growth rate. Revenue reached US$1.214 billion in the three months to September 30, up 10% both on a reported and organic basis, while diluted EPS rose 18% to US$4.01 on a GAAP basis.

The upgrade is meaningful because it rests primarily on operating performance rather than acquisition contribution. IDEXX lifted the midpoint of its full-year revenue range by US$32 million to US$4.754 billion and increased the midpoint of its EPS outlook by US$0.25 to US$15.06. The company now expects organic revenue growth of 9.3% to 10.0%, compared with its previous range of 8.5% to 9.7%.

Recurring diagnostics revenue remains the engine

CAG Diagnostics recurring revenue, a key indicator of the installed customer base and ongoing testing activity, grew 11% as reported and organically to US$967.4 million. International growth was particularly strong at 14% organically, while the US delivered 10% organic growth.

Within that recurring base, IDEXX VetLab consumables revenue rose 15% organically. Reference laboratory diagnostic and consulting services increased 10% organically, supported by testing volumes, new customers and price realisation. Rapid assay products were the weaker component, with organic revenue growth of just 1% as pricing benefits offset lower testing volumes.

inVue Dx placements build the installed base

IDEXX placed more than 1,900 inVue Dx analyzers during the quarter, taking the installed base to nearly 11,000 instruments. Capital instrument revenue was essentially flat, however, meaning the immediate significance of the placements lies less in the quarter’s equipment sales than in the potential expansion of future consumables utilisation. That connection is an editorial interpretation of the business model, not a forecast provided by the company.

Veterinary software, services and diagnostic imaging systems revenue grew 10% organically, helped by diagnostic imaging installations led by ImageVue DR50 Plus. IDEXX also highlighted the CoVet acquisition, an AI clinical assistant, and said the deal would add about US$5 million to 2026 revenue. The release did not quantify the acquisition’s longer-term revenue contribution or integration outcome.

Margin guidance falls as acquisition costs enter the picture

The quarter’s profitability was strong: GAAP gross margin rose 110 basis points to 62.9%, while operating margin increased 100 basis points to 33.1%. Comparable operating margin, which excludes currency and other specified adjustments, rose 60 basis points. Comparable EPS increased 22% to US$3.96, versus the reported US$4.01, with the difference reflecting items including currency, share-based compensation tax benefits and an equity investment gain.

That momentum did not translate into a higher full-year margin target. IDEXX now expects 2026 operating margin of 32.1% to 32.3%, down from 32.3% to 32.5%, and projects margin expansion of 50 to 70 basis points rather than 70 to 90 basis points. The company said the revised outlook includes acquisition-related impacts, while operating expenses rose 10% in the quarter as IDEXX expanded commercial capabilities and its innovation programme.

The next test is converting placements into recurring usage

IDEXX generated US$1.063 billion in operating cash flow during the first nine months and US$977.6 million in free cash flow, while repurchasing US$804.7 million of stock in the open market. The balance sheet showed US$197.5 million of cash and US$474 million drawn under its credit facility at September 30, alongside additional long-term debt.

The company has pointed to IDEXX Cancer Dx’s expansion into a multi-cancer panel and a planned 2027 presentation for its next point-of-care analyser, MultiCue Dx, as part of its innovation pipeline. For shareholders, the nearer question is more concrete: whether the unusually large inVue Dx placement quarter produces sustained consumables growth without further eroding the margin outlook through acquisition and launch spending.

Bottom Line?

The earnings upgrade is backed by strong recurring diagnostics growth, but the next proof point is whether inVue Dx adoption expands utilisation faster than acquisition costs pressure margins.

Questions in the middle?

  • Can the nearly 11,000-instrument inVue Dx base translate into sustained consumables utilisation growth?
  • How much additional margin pressure could CoVet and other acquisition-related investments create in 2027?
  • Will IDEXX’s international diagnostics momentum continue once the reported benefit from currency movements changes?
