Commercial revenue overtakes government sales
Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:PLTR) has reached a notable inflection point: its US commercial business generated more revenue than its US government business for the first time. Commercial revenue rose 148% year on year and 29% quarter on quarter to US$984 million in fiscal Q3 2026, while US government revenue increased 96% year on year to US$953 million.
The shift came alongside a 119% year-on-year increase in total US revenue to US$1.937 billion. Palantir’s overall revenue climbed 96% to US$2.313 billion, taking quarterly sales above US$2 billion for the first time. The release attributes the company’s strategy to its Foundry, Ontology and Artificial Intelligence Platform products, while chief executive Alex Karp framed the opportunity around what he called the “Sovereign AI” movement.
Record sales arrived with unusually high margins
Palantir reported GAAP income from operations of US$1.085 billion, equivalent to a 47% operating margin, and GAAP net income attributable to common stockholders of US$1.128 billion, or US$0.44 diluted earnings per share. Cash generated from operations reached US$1.205 billion, while adjusted free cash flow was US$1.216 billion, a 53% margin.
The company’s adjusted income from operations was US$1.427 billion, or a 62% margin. That non-GAAP measure excludes US$318.9 million of stock-based compensation and US$23.1 million of related employer payroll taxes. The gap between the GAAP and adjusted figures is therefore material, even though both measures point to substantial operating profitability.
Guidance rises as commercial pipeline expands
Palantir raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to between US$8.530 billion and US$8.534 billion, implying 91% year-on-year growth. US commercial revenue is now expected to exceed US$3.559 billion, representing growth of at least 143%. The company also lifted adjusted operating income guidance to US$5.245 billion to US$5.249 billion and adjusted free cash flow guidance to US$4.8 billion to US$5.0 billion.
Contract activity provides another measure of demand, although it is not the same as recognised revenue. Palantir closed 212 deals worth at least US$1 million during the quarter, including 64 deals of at least US$10 million. Total contract value rose 6% year on year to US$2.918 billion, while US commercial remaining deal value increased 79% to US$6.517 billion. The company cautions that these measures assume contract options are exercised and do not account for all possible terminations.
Execution now faces the harder test
Palantir ended September with US$10.4 billion in cash, cash equivalents and US Treasury securities, giving it considerable financial capacity as it pursues expansion. The immediate test is less about whether demand is visible than whether the pace of commercial growth and the reported margins can persist as the customer base and implementation burden grow.
Fourth-quarter guidance calls for revenue of US$2.649 billion to US$2.653 billion and adjusted operating income of US$1.640 billion to US$1.644 billion. The next set of results will show whether the commercial crossover was the start of a durable revenue mix change or an unusually strong quarter in a business whose contract values still depend partly on customer options and renewals.
Bottom Line?
Palantir has raised the bar for itself: the next catalyst is evidence that commercial growth can remain this rapid without widening the gap between GAAP and adjusted profitability.
Questions in the middle?
- Can US commercial revenue sustain triple-digit growth as Palantir moves beyond its current customer base?
- How much of the US$6.517 billion commercial remaining deal value will convert into recognised revenue, and over what timeframe?
- Will stock-based compensation remain a significant difference between GAAP results and the company’s adjusted margin measures?
