11% Recurring Revenue Growth Supports Broadridge’s Reaffirmed Fiscal 2027 Targets

Broadridge delivered double-digit recurring revenue growth in fiscal first quarter 2027 and reaffirmed its full-year targets. But a digital asset loss, restructuring charges and weaker event-driven revenue pushed reported earnings and margins lower.

  • Recurring revenue increased 11% to US$1.083 billion
  • Adjusted EPS rose 3% to US$1.56, while GAAP diluted EPS fell 41%
  • US$40 million digital asset loss weighed on reported earnings
  • Closed sales increased 10% to US$36 million
  • Fiscal 2027 guidance was reaffirmed across revenue, earnings and cash flow targets

Broadridge Financial Solutions, Inc. (NYSE:BR) kept its fiscal 2027 targets intact after recurring revenue climbed 11% in the first quarter, even as reported earnings were sharply reduced by digital asset losses and restructuring costs. Recurring revenue reached US$1.083 billion for the three months ended September 30, 2026, while total revenue rose 5% to US$1.669 billion.

Recurring Revenue Growth Outpaces Total Revenue

The quarter’s strongest operating signal came from Broadridge’s recurring businesses. Growth was 11% on a constant-currency basis, including 9 percentage points of organic growth, according to the company. Closed sales also rose 10% to US$36 million.

Global Technology and Operations led the recurring revenue performance, rising 13% on a constant-currency basis to US$516 million. Capital Markets revenue increased 17%, helped by organic growth and the CQG acquisition. Investor Communication Solutions generated US$568 million of recurring revenue, up 10%, with Regulatory revenue rising 17% and data-driven fund solutions up 10%.

Digital Asset Loss Drives GAAP Earnings Decline

The headline earnings numbers were considerably less forgiving. GAAP operating income fell 8% to US$174 million, reducing the operating margin to 10.4% from 11.9%. Net earnings dropped 43% to US$95 million, and diluted EPS fell 41% to US$0.83 from US$1.40.

Broadridge reported a US$40 million loss on digital assets during the quarter, compared with a US$46 million gain in the prior-year period. It also recorded US$15 million of restructuring and related costs, including severance connected in part with AI and productivity initiatives. The company said it continues to evaluate expanding those workforce actions. Its adjusted figures exclude these items, as well as acquisition-related costs and amortisation of acquired intangibles: adjusted operating income fell 9% to US$230 million, while adjusted EPS increased 3% to US$1.56.

Event-Driven Revenue Falls as Core Segments Expand

The 5% increase in total revenue masked a sharp split between business lines. Event-driven revenue declined 41% to US$67 million, primarily because of lower mutual fund proxy revenue. Distribution revenue increased 4% to US$518 million, with the company attributing about US$18 million of that rise to higher postage rates.

Broadridge generated US$93 million in operating cash flow and US$76 million in non-GAAP free cash flow, compared with US$42 million and US$13 million respectively in the prior-year quarter. It returned US$111 million through dividends and repurchased US$200 million of its shares, although cash and equivalents fell to US$284 million from US$403 million at the end of June while long-term debt increased to US$3.35 billion.

Management reaffirmed its targets for 6% to 8% recurring revenue growth on a constant-currency basis, 8% to 12% adjusted EPS growth, an adjusted operating margin of about 21%, free cash flow conversion of at least 100% and closed sales of US$290 million to US$330 million. The guidance excludes gains and losses on digital assets, which the company says cannot be forecast.

The next strategic checkpoint arrives on December 8, when Broadridge plans to publish new three-year financial objectives at its Investor Day. The filing also points to an ambition to generate US$25 million in fiscal 2027 AI savings, while the quarter’s restructuring charge shows that the productivity programme already carries a measurable cost. The question is whether those savings can broaden margins without disrupting the recurring platforms currently supplying the growth.

Bottom Line?

Broadridge’s recurring revenue engine remains firm, but the path to its full-year margin and EPS targets now depends on execution, AI savings and the volatility of its digital asset holdings.

Questions in the middle?

  • How much of the US$25 million AI savings target will be offset by further restructuring costs?
  • Can recurring revenue growth remain above the 6% to 8% full-year guidance range as event-driven revenue normalises?
  • What new three-year objectives will Broadridge set at its December 8 Investor Day?
