City Chic's full-price reset brings positive EBIT into view
City Chic says reduced discounting is lifting margins and store sales, putting the retailer on track for positive first-half EBIT and no drawn debt by the end of January. The improvement comes with revenue still under pressure, particularly in the USA and online channels, leaving the Black Friday and Christmas period decisive.
- Positive first-half EBIT expected, subject to peak-season trading
- Group comparable sales up 1.2% and comparable trading gross margin dollars up 5.1%
- ANZ full-price store comparable sales rise 19.6%
- Group revenue excluding wholesale falls 1.7%, while gross margin dollars increase 2.2%
- No drawn debt expected at the end of 1H FY27

Margin gains put first-half EBIT within reach
City Chic Collective Limited (ASX:CCX) is expecting to post positive EBIT for the first half of FY27 after an early trading reset produced stronger margins, even as revenue remained slightly below last year. For the 18 weeks to 1 November, group comparable sales rose 1.2% and comparable trading gross margin dollars increased 5.1%.
The more telling figure sits outside the discontinued wholesale business: revenue fell 1.7% against the prior corresponding period, but gross margin dollars rose 2.2%. City Chic said group trading gross margin expanded by 240 basis points as it reduced promotional activity, particularly online, and leaned harder on full-price sales.
ANZ stores carry the recovery
ANZ stores are doing most of the heavy lifting. Comparable store sales increased 15.4%, including a 19.6% increase in full-price stores, while total store sales rose 7.5% despite the network being seven stores smaller than a year earlier. Four stores have closed since June, while a new outlet opened at Rouse Hill Town Centre in October.
The result extends the operational improvement described in City Chic's FY26 EBITDA recovery, which was driven by stronger ANZ trading, higher margins and a leaner cost base. The company said its Spring/Summer range had been well received, with changes to product quality and price points intended to offer value without relying on deeper or more frequent discounts.
Online and USA sales remain the fault lines
The strategy is not painless. ANZ online comparable sales fell 7.4%, and trading gross margin dollars declined 4.5%, although online gross margin was 200 basis points above the prior year as fulfilment costs and the sales mix improved. Across the group, online comparable sales fell 8.1%.
The USA business presents a sharper trade-off. Comparable sales dropped 12.0%, but comparable trading gross margin dollars increased 7.1%, while USA online trading gross margin was 1,060 basis points above the prior corresponding period. The USA operation remains profitable, according to City Chic, but rebuilding sales momentum remains unfinished work. Total USA sales fell 34.2%, partly reflecting the discontinuation of wholesale activity.
Peak season and cash position set the next test
City Chic said operating costs remain tightly managed and expects to finish the first half with a positive cash balance and no drawn debt. Its $10 million debt facility remains available until 31 March 2028, and the first of two required FY27 clean downs has been completed, with the second expected in December.
Those expectations remain conditional rather than locked in. Black Friday and Christmas trading still account for the most important weeks of the half, and the company says the positive EBIT outcome depends on sales momentum continuing. The next formal checkpoint is the 1H FY27 result in February 2027, when investors will have to judge whether the margin improvement can persist without further erosion in online and USA demand.
Bottom Line?
City Chic has made the margin trade-off work so far, but peak-season sales will determine whether a promising reset becomes a durable return to profitability.
Questions in the middle?
- Can full-price demand hold through Black Friday and Christmas without a renewed increase in discounting?
- Will the USA margin gains translate into a recovery in sales, or remain a feature of a smaller operation?
- Can City Chic sustain positive EBIT while online and total revenue remain below the prior year?
