Estée Lauder maps a more profitable recovery through fiscal 2030

Consumer Staples By Victor Sage 5 min read

Estée Lauder has set a fiscal 2030 ambition of mid-single-digit organic sales growth, an adjusted operating margin of 16.5% to 18.5%, and double-digit adjusted EPS growth. The company also raised its fiscal 2027 outlook after a strong first quarter, while flagging the execution and adjustment risks behind its long-range targets.

  • Fiscal 2030 organic net sales growth targeted in the mid-single digits
  • Adjusted operating margin ambition of 16.5% to 18.5%
  • Double-digit adjusted EPS growth targeted through fiscal 2030
  • Fiscal 2027 outlook raised after strong first-quarter performance
  • China, AI, efficiency and travel retail form the growth platform

The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. (NYSE:EL) has put a number on its recovery plan: by fiscal 2030, it wants sustainable mid-single-digit annual organic net sales growth and an adjusted operating margin of 16.5% to 18.5%. The prestige beauty group also expects double-digit adjusted diluted earnings-per-share growth through the period, setting a demanding long-range benchmark after a year of improving sales and profitability.

Fiscal 2030 Targets Rest on Margin Expansion

Management said the margin ambition will be supported by the final execution of its Profit Recovery and Growth Plan, everyday efficiency measures and further gross-margin improvement. It expects the largest margin expansion in fiscal 2028, when the plan’s final initiatives are expected to reach a full-year run rate, with more measured gains in fiscal 2029 and fiscal 2030.

The company’s presentation showed adjusted operating margin rising from 8.0% in fiscal 2025 to 11.2% in fiscal 2026, while its revised fiscal 2027 outlook calls for 12.9% to 13.7%. Reaching the fiscal 2030 range would therefore require a further 350 to 560 basis points at the upper end of the current fiscal 2027 outlook, based on the company’s adjusted figures.

Raised Fiscal 2027 Outlook Follows First-Quarter Momentum

The near-term reset is material. Estée Lauder lifted its fiscal 2027 reported sales-growth outlook to 5.0% to 6.5%, from 3% to 5%, and its organic sales-growth outlook to 4.0% to 5.5%, also from 3% to 5%. Its adjusted operating-margin outlook moved to 12.9% to 13.7%, while adjusted diluted EPS growth is now expected at 28% to 38%, compared with the previous ranges of 12.7% to 13.5% and 24% to 34%, respectively.

The company said fiscal 2027 began strongly, with first-quarter reported sales growth of 7%, organic sales growth of 6%, adjusted gross-margin expansion of 240 basis points, adjusted operating-margin expansion of 480 basis points and adjusted diluted EPS growth of 125%. That performance was part of the fragrance-led first-quarter rebound reported earlier this week, although the longer-range ambition depends on those gains becoming repeatable across categories and regions.

China and Digital Execution Carry Strategic Weight

China was the setting for the capital-markets event and a central part of the investment case. The company said Mainland China delivered 9% organic growth in fiscal 2027’s first quarter, after growth across every region for a second consecutive quarter. It is targeting broader online reach, selective store expansion and more locally developed innovation, with China positioned as a testing ground for products, marketing and operating methods that can be scaled globally.

Estée Lauder also pointed to its unified commerce platform, artificial-intelligence tools and operating-model changes as sources of faster product launches, better resource allocation and lower non-consumer-facing costs. It said 85% of roles covered by its Accenture transition had moved by October, WPP had consolidated its media work from more than 30 agencies to one global agency, and Shopify deployment remained on track across brand websites and freestanding stores through fiscal 2027.

Cash Generation and Adjusted Metrics Remain Key Tests

The plan is not solely a margin exercise. Estée Lauder expects higher earnings, lower restructuring payments, working-capital efficiencies and more disciplined capital expenditure to lift operating cash flow and free cash flow through fiscal 2030. It says the resulting flexibility could support investment, debt repayment, shareholder returns and selective minority investments or single-brand acquisitions.

There are important qualifications. The targets are unaudited ambitions and use forward-looking non-GAAP measures, for which the company has not provided full GAAP reconciliations. Estée Lauder expects approximately US$40 million to US$50 million of pretax restructuring and other charges in fiscal 2028, while the impact of foreign exchange and the first-quarter fiscal 2028 sales effect from its Forest Essentials acquisition cannot yet be forecast with reasonable certainty. The question for future results is whether reported performance can approach the adjusted trajectory once those exclusions and other moving parts are accounted for.

Bottom Line?

The upgraded fiscal 2027 targets offer an early test of the fiscal 2030 promise: sustained organic growth must now arrive alongside margin gains, cash conversion and fewer costly adjustments.

Questions in the middle?

  • Can Estée Lauder sustain mid-single-digit organic growth once the first-quarter rebound and fragrance momentum moderate?
  • Will the Profit Recovery and Growth Plan deliver the projected fiscal 2028 margin step-up without weakening consumer-facing investment?
  • How closely will reported GAAP earnings and cash flow track the company’s adjusted fiscal 2030 ambitions?
