Trimble reaches record recurring revenue as third-quarter earnings beat expectations
Trimble delivered record annualized recurring revenue and a stronger-than-expected third quarter, while a US$562 million goodwill impairment keeps the headline GAAP picture complicated. The company raised no quantified comparison to its previous outlook, but issued full-year revenue and earnings ranges for 2026.
- Record US$2.56 billion annualized recurring revenue, up 11% year over year
- Third-quarter revenue rose 7% to US$966.8 million
- Non-GAAP diluted EPS was US$0.86, compared with US$0.25 on a GAAP basis
- US$562 million goodwill impairment recorded against the T&L segment in the first nine months
- US$231.7 million spent repurchasing approximately 4 million shares during the quarter

Recurring revenue reached a record US$2.56 billion at Trimble Inc. (NASDAQ:TRMB), giving the software and positioning technology group a strong centrepiece for its third-quarter result. Revenue rose 7% year over year to US$966.8 million and the company said the quarter exceeded expectations on revenue and earnings per share, although it did not disclose the underlying comparison.
Recurring Revenue Growth Supports Connect and Scale Strategy
Trimble reported annualized recurring revenue growth of 11% year over year, or 10% on an organic basis. Subscription and services revenue accounted for US$642.5 million of the quarter's total, up from US$598.7 million a year earlier, while product revenue increased to US$324.3 million from US$302.5 million.
Adjusted measures showed the operational strength more clearly than the statutory result. Non-GAAP operating income rose to US$262.6 million, equal to 27.2% of revenue, from US$254.2 million a year earlier. Non-GAAP diluted earnings per share increased to US$0.86 from US$0.81, while adjusted EBITDA reached US$278.5 million, or 28.8% of revenue.
Goodwill Impairment Leaves Full Year GAAP Loss in View
The major complication sits below operating performance. Trimble recorded a US$562 million goodwill impairment against its T&L segment during the first nine months, citing a sustained decline in market capitalisation and share price, heightened macroeconomic uncertainty and lower market multiples for software businesses. That charge helped push first-nine-month GAAP net income to a US$313.7 million loss, despite US$2.88 billion of revenue and US$418.0 million of GAAP operating income.
The contrast is also visible in the outlook. Trimble expects 2026 revenue of US$3.91 billion to US$3.94 billion and non-GAAP diluted earnings per share of US$3.63 to US$3.69, but forecasts a GAAP loss per share of US$0.55 to US$0.49. The non-GAAP figures exclude, among other items, purchased-intangible amortisation, stock-based compensation, restructuring and acquisition-related costs, as well as the goodwill impairment. The company's unusually high projected GAAP tax rate range adds another layer of volatility to the statutory forecast.
Cash Generation Funds Buybacks and Acquisition Spending
Cash generation was substantial: operating cash flow reached US$664.7 million in the first nine months, compared with US$225.9 million a year earlier, while free cash flow was US$643.6 million. Trimble used US$552.9 million for share repurchases over that period, including approximately 4 million shares bought for US$231.7 million in the third quarter. It also spent US$236.5 million on acquisitions, and ended the period with US$214.5 million in cash against US$1.53 billion of short-term and long-term debt.
The fourth quarter guidance calls for revenue of US$1.031 billion to US$1.061 billion, GAAP diluted EPS of US$0.83 to US$0.89 and non-GAAP diluted EPS of US$1.13 to US$1.19. The next test is whether recurring revenue growth can continue to offset pressure reflected in the T&L impairment, while the cash being returned to shareholders does not narrow financial flexibility as acquisition and debt activity continue.
Bottom Line?
Trimble's recurring revenue engine is producing solid growth, but the T&L impairment makes the durability of that growth and the quality of future GAAP earnings the key issues for the next update.
Questions in the middle?
- Can Trimble sustain 10% organic annualized recurring revenue growth as it transitions more of its business towards subscriptions?
- What operating changes, if any, will follow the T&L segment's US$562 million goodwill impairment?
- How much further can share repurchases run alongside acquisition spending and US$1.53 billion of debt?
