PNC has named retail banking chief Alexander Overstrom as its next chief financial officer, with the handover scheduled for March 2027. Current CFO Robert Reilly will remain with the bank as executive vice chairman, preserving senior leadership continuity.
- Alexander Overstrom to become CFO on March 1, 2027
- Robert Reilly to move into an executive vice chairman role
- Reilly has held the CFO position since 2013
- Overstrom’s permanent retail banking successor has not yet been named
The PNC Financial Services Group (NYSE:PNC) is planning a senior finance handover that keeps both sides of the succession inside the bank. Alexander E. C. Overstrom, currently PNC’s head of Retail Banking, will become chief financial officer on March 1, 2027, while incumbent CFO Robert Q. Reilly moves into the newly expanded role of executive vice chairman.
CFO transition set for March 2027
Reilly will remain CFO through the release of PNC’s 2026 year-end financial reports before taking up his new position. In that role, he will advise chairman and chief executive William S. Demchak on strategic initiatives and operating priorities, while also handling senior stakeholder engagement with clients across the bank.
Reilly has been PNC’s CFO since 2013 and joined the bank in 1987. During his tenure, PNC completed the acquisition of BBVA USA in 2021 and bought Colorado-based FirstBank Holding Company in January 2026. The announcement does not disclose any change to earnings, capital, liquidity or financial guidance.
Overstrom brings retail and strategy experience
Overstrom, 42, joined PNC in 2014 after eight years in firmwide strategy and investment banking at Goldman Sachs. Since then, he has held roles spanning merchant services, aviation finance and corporate and institutional banking before becoming head of Retail Banking in 2022.
His current remit covers consumer and small business banking, home and consumer lending, payments and digital, PNC Wealth Management, enterprise customer advocacy and corporate strategy. Demchak said the CFO role required financial acumen as well as analytical, strategic and operating experience, and pointed to Overstrom’s work growing the retail business as evidence of that combination.
Retail Banking succession remains open
PNC said it will name a permanent successor for Overstrom’s retail banking role in due course. That appointment is the remaining open piece of an otherwise staged transition: the bank has identified the next CFO well ahead of the effective date, while retaining Reilly as a senior adviser.
Bottom Line?
The CFO handover looks orderly, but the next retail banking appointment will show how much operating continuity PNC intends to preserve beneath its finance leadership change.
Questions in the middle?
- Who will take over Overstrom’s broad Retail Banking mandate, and how quickly will that appointment be made?
- Will Overstrom maintain PNC’s existing approach to capital management, reporting and strategic priorities after March 2027?
- How much influence will Reilly’s executive vice chairman role carry over PNC’s next phase of acquisitions and growth?
