Ballard Mining Hits Record 9m at 27.1 g/t Gold at West Knell, Mt Ida

Mining By Maxwell Dee 3 min read

Ballard Mining has delivered its highest gold intercept to date at the West Knell Prospect within the Mt Ida Gold Project, reporting 9 metres at 27.1 grams per tonne gold. This breakthrough expands mineralisation along the underexplored Ballard Fault Zone and supports an upcoming resource update and mining lease application.

  • Record 9m at 27.1 g/t gold intercept at West Knell
  • Drilling extends mineralisation northwards and at depth
  • Ballard Fault Zone shows camp-scale gold district potential
  • Updated Mineral Resource Estimate due in September quarter
  • Mining lease grant for West Knell expected soon

Record Gold Intercept Boosts Mt Ida Prospects

Ballard Mining (ASX:BM1) has struck its best-ever gold intercept at the West Knell Prospect, part of its Mt Ida Gold Project in Western Australia’s Goldfields region. The standout result, 9 metres grading 27.1 grams per tonne (g/t) gold from 191 metres downhole, translates to a hefty 244 gram-metre intercept, a key metric combining grade and length.

This intercept lies beyond the current resource envelope, signalling fresh upside potential. Additional hits from nearby holes include 4 metres at 7.2 g/t and 2 metres at 5.6 g/t gold, reinforcing the prospect’s growing significance. West Knell now boasts approximately 1.4 kilometres of strike continuity, with mineralisation extending north and deeper than previously recorded.

Expanding the Ballard Fault Zone Gold System

West Knell sits within the 13-kilometre Ballard Fault Zone, an emerging gold corridor on the eastern flank of the Copperfield Granite intrusion. Ballard’s Managing Director Paul Brennan highlighted the zone’s untapped potential, contrasting it with the better-known Baldock Thrust, which hosts 90% of Mt Ida’s existing 1.2 million ounce gold resource.

“The Ballard Fault hosts the same rocks as Baldock and is expected to make a significant contribution to the scale of Mt Ida,” Brennan said. The fault zone already contains multiple satellite deposits including Kestrel and Golden Vale, with recent drilling confirming mineralisation at Ayla, Europa, Pulsar, and Neptune prospects. This suggests a linked, camp-scale gold system may be taking shape.

Resource Growth and Development Strategy

Ballard is pursuing a dual-track approach at Mt Ida: growing resources while advancing project development. The West Knell results feed directly into this strategy, with an updated Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) expected late in the September quarter. The company is also awaiting the grant of a mining lease for West Knell, anticipated within the same timeframe, which would clear a key regulatory hurdle.

West Knell’s shallow depth, favourable geometry, and proximity to planned infrastructure make it a promising satellite ore source to support Ballard’s proposed standalone gold operation at Mt Ida. The project already benefits from extensive mining approvals, including open pit and underground mining at the Baldock deposit, and a works approval for a 2 million tonnes per annum processing plant.

Ongoing Exploration and Resource Expansion

Drilling across Mt Ida remains active, with 45 holes totalling over 5,500 metres completed recently along the Ballard Fault Zone and the Baldock Thrust. Assays from other regional prospects are pending, promising further updates on resource growth. Ballard’s Mt Ida Project currently holds a JORC-compliant resource of 12.2 million tonnes at 3.0 g/t gold for 1.2 million ounces, with the Baldock deposit alone accounting for over 1 million ounces at 3.5 g/t.

The company’s aggressive exploration program aims to expand this inventory and underpin a robust standalone operation. West Knell’s breakthrough intercept adds a compelling chapter to this narrative, confirming the Ballard Fault Zone as a fertile ground for multi-million-ounce gold discoveries.

Bottom Line?

West Knell’s record intercept sharpens focus on the Ballard Fault Zone’s potential to transform Mt Ida into a multi-million-ounce gold district, with resource updates and mining lease approvals poised to shape the next phase.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will upcoming assay results from other Ballard Fault prospects confirm the corridor’s camp-scale potential?
  • How will the West Knell mining lease grant impact Ballard’s development timeline at Mt Ida?
  • What are the implications of West Knell’s high-grade intercept for the economics of a standalone Mt Ida operation?
