Drilling Gains, Takeover Bids and Profit Surprises Drive Week 32

Small-cap resources stocks led the week, while takeover activity and strong company results added to the gains. Wellnex Life more than doubled, but sharp falls in Trek Metals and Ionic Rare Earths showed that positive news did not always bring buyers.

  • Wellnex Life rose 105.36% after agreeing to sell Pain Away for up to A$21.3 million.
  • Pentanet gained 53.33% as EBITDA rose 74% and cloud gaming revenue improved.
  • QEM climbed 46.67% after advancing its acquisition of Idaho tungsten and critical minerals projects.
  • Gold, copper and rare earth explorers recorded some of the strongest gains.
  • Trek Metals fell 49.57% despite reporting a 42.3% manganese intercept.

Wellnex Life (ASX:WNX) was the clear leader, rising 105.36% after agreeing to sell its Pain Away brand for up to A$21.3 million. The deal could repay A$10.2 million of debt and leave the company debt-free, which explains the strong buying.

Pentanet (ASX:5GG) followed with a 53.33% gain. Revenue rose 8% to A$24.4 million, while earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation increased 74% to A$2.4 million. Investors paid for the faster growth in cloud gaming and 5G subscribers.

QEM (ASX:QEM) added 46.67% after moving ahead with its Idaho acquisition. The projects include tungsten, fluorspar and niobium. These minerals are used in industry, defence and technology, and the United States is seeking more local supply.

Resources lead the advance

Exploration stocks filled much of the week’s leaderboard. Somerset Minerals (ASX:SMM) rose 41.18% after reporting copper samples as high as 46.3% at its Nunavut project. The stock reopened at A$0.009 and then moved 33.33% higher. Buying continued after the gap because drilling had already confirmed a long mineralised corridor.

Kalamazoo Resources (ASX:KZR) gained 40.00% after drilling returned 36 metres at 16 grams of gold per tonne. The result supports a larger gold resource at Mt Olympus. Black Bear Minerals (ASX:BKB) also rose 18.56% after its study outlined a possible low-cost gold mine in Nevada.

Not every resources announcement produced gains. Trek Metals (ASX:TKM) fell 49.57%, even after finding 10 metres at 42.3% manganese. The stock reopened at A$0.11 and then fell 47.27%. That suggests sellers wanted to exit despite the drilling result, possibly because the company still needs more drilling and studies before it can show a mine plan.

Profits and deals support larger companies

Several established businesses reported stronger earnings. Pinnacle Investment Management (ASX:PNI) rose 17.83% after profit increased 31.5% to A$176.7 million. Funds under management reached A$229.4 billion, helped by new money from retail and institutional investors.

James Hardie Industries (ASX:JHX) climbed 16.04% after sales rose 64% to A$1.475 billion. The AZEK acquisition drove much of that increase. AMP (ASX:AMP) added 12.56% after first-half profit rose 57% to A$154 million.

Takeover activity also moved prices. Austral Resources (ASX:AR1) gained 16.13% after offering A$0.087 a share for Hammer Metals. Steadfast Group (ASX:SDF) rose 2.74% as a consortium continued its A$6 cash proposal. The deal is not certain, since final checks and a binding agreement are still required.

Biotech results attract buyers

Neuren Pharmaceuticals (ASX:NEU) rose 26.22% after DAYBUE sales increased 30% in the second quarter. The company lifted its 2026 royalty forecast to US$53 million to US$56 million. European approval and a Japanese trial remain important future tests.

Clarity Pharmaceuticals (ASX:CU6) gained 13.50% after its prostate cancer treatment produced large falls in a cancer marker for many patients. The data is early. Larger late-stage trials must still support approval before the treatment can be sold widely.

ResMed (ASX:RMD) fell 3.09% despite 10% revenue growth and a 10% dividend increase. Investors may have expected more from the result, while the MatrixCare sale and Noctrix Health acquisition add changes for the business to manage.

Bottom Line?

The next week will be shaped by drilling updates, company earnings and takeover deadlines. Investors will watch whether recent resource gains continue after more results arrive, and whether announced deals move from proposals to completed transactions.

Questions in the middle?

  • Can Wellnex Life complete the Pain Away sale and repay its debt on the proposed timetable?
  • Will Somerset Minerals and other drilling stocks keep their gains when follow-up assays arrive?
  • Can Austral Resources secure control of Hammer Metals before the 10 August matching period ends?
