Hawk’s $1.36 Million Olympus Bet Reaches the Assay Stage

Hawk Resources has exercised its option to acquire an 80% interest in Western Australia’s Olympus scandium project after securing the approvals needed to begin exploration. The immediate test is whether laboratory assays can validate historical pXRF anomalies before drilling proceeds.

Hawk Pays $1.36 Million for Olympus Interest

Hawk Resources Limited (ASX:HWK) has moved to take an 80% interest in the Olympus scandium project in Western Australia’s West Musgrave region, paying $210,000 to fund Opal Resources’ underlying option exercise and a further $1.15 million in cash consideration. The transaction is not yet fully complete: closing remains subject to Beau Resources completing its own option agreement, which Hawk expects to occur in September 2026.

Hawk and Opal have also agreed to waive conditions relating to the assignment of an existing third-party agreement and execution of a joint venture agreement, although both documents are still to be executed before completion. The company said it had received all Traditional Owner and government approvals required to start exploration.

1,350 Samples Will Test Historical Scandium Signals

Field work is scheduled to begin on 21 September, with Hawk planning to collect 1,350 lag soil samples. Sampling lines will be spaced 100 metres either side of historical lines, targeting zones where earlier portable XRF readings indicated elevated scandium. Unlike the historical work, the new samples will be sent for laboratory assay.

That distinction matters. Olympus has no mineral resource or demonstrated economic viability, and the historical exploration was completed before, and not in compliance with, JORC 2012. Hawk says pXRF readings are indicative only and should not be treated as a substitute for laboratory assays, with variation in grades and widths expected when the material is tested in a laboratory.

Historical Anomaly Covers 28 Square Kilometres

The project comprises two granted exploration licences covering about 309 square kilometres. Historical soil and lag sampling identified a scandium anomaly measuring approximately 4km by 7km, with reported pXRF readings of up to 1,284 parts per million and five discrete zones above 1,000ppm.

Earlier reconnaissance RAB drilling also returned near-surface pXRF intersections, including 11 metres at 934ppm scandium from surface in hole MMB0017 and 5 metres at 948ppm from surface in MMB0002. Individual one-metre readings reached 2,164ppm. Those numbers are eye-catching, but the historical drilling was not designed to target scandium and the company says the true thickness of the mineralisation remains unconfirmed.

Assays Decide Whether Drilling Follows

Hawk’s proposed sequence is straightforward: complete the soil campaign, review laboratory results and, if the results support the historical signal, undertake infill sampling before moving to RAB or aircore drilling in the fourth quarter. The company has described the target as a potential new scandium province, but the next meaningful evidence will come from the laboratory rather than the pXRF archive.

That leaves two near-term gates for shareholders: completion of the underlying Beau transaction and confirmation that fresh assays reproduce the earlier anomaly. Until both are cleared, Olympus remains an exploration option with promising historical indications, not a defined scandium deposit.
