Metro Mining faces a narrower window to recover lost shipments
Metro Mining has reset its 2026 bauxite shipment guidance to 6.0-6.5 million wet metric tonnes after September performance fell below plan. The company is relying on channel repairs, stronger staffing and a drier weather outlook to recover shipments before its February maintenance shutdown.

2026 Shipment Guidance Reset
Metro Mining Limited (ASX:MMI) has lowered its 2026 bauxite shipment guidance to 6.0-6.5 million wet metric tonnes, acknowledging that September performance fell below plan at its Bauxite Hills mine in Cape York. The revised range incorporates the constraints experienced during the year, progress on mitigation measures and assumptions based on 2026 operating performance, including weather-related risks.
The announcement does not disclose the previous guidance range or quantify the effect on revenue, earnings or cash flow. That leaves the operational downgrade as the clearest immediate signal for shareholders, while the financial consequences will need to be assessed alongside the company’s third-quarter update.
Channel Repairs Target Loading Constraints
The main operational response is a channel maintenance bed-levelling campaign that began in the first week of October. Metro says approved depths capable of supporting upside production are expected to be reached within days, with the bed-levelling team scheduled to continue for another two weeks to reduce channel risk.
The work follows the September channel disruption, when a collapsed sand bank and workforce disruption contributed to weaker operating performance. Metro’s current announcement says the constraints affecting September shipments are being mitigated, but does not provide a revised estimate of the tonnes lost or confirm how quickly normalised performance can be sustained.
Staffing and Transhipping Capacity Improve
Mine productivity and equipment utilisation are being supported by retention measures already introduced, additional recruitment and temporary labour hire. Ore hauled in October had reached 463,000 WMT by 17 October, although the company does not provide a comparable monthly target or shipment figure in this update.
Metro says all transhipping assets are available, while its Offshore Floating Terminal Ikamba is achieving loading rates above target. The TSA Skardon floating crane barge is also available if required, giving the company additional transhipping capacity should operating conditions demand it.
Weather and February Shutdown Set the Window
The Bureau of Meteorology’s three-month forecast for Western Cape York anticipates a delayed or drier start to the usual northern monsoonal pattern. Metro says investments made over the past three years, including additional stockpiles and conveyor modifications, leave it positioned to operate into January and use safe, risk-assessed loading windows before the planned maintenance shutdown in February.
The revised guidance therefore rests on several moving parts: channel depth, labour availability, equipment utilisation, transhipping performance and weather. Metro says its Asian bauxite market strategy remains intact, but the next test will be whether October’s improved haulage translates into shipments before seasonal and planned maintenance constraints narrow the operating window.
Bottom Line?
The immediate recovery case depends on October execution. The Q3 report and webinar at the end of October should show whether improved haulage and channel access are translating into shipments, rather than merely restoring mine readiness.
Questions in the middle?
- Can Metro sustain the October improvement in ore haulage through the remaining pre-shutdown loading window?
- What financial impact will the revised shipment range have on revenue, cash flow and balance-sheet flexibility?
- Will channel bed-levelling provide durable access, or will further maintenance be needed before the February shutdown?
