Northrop Grumman selects AML3D for submarine manufacturing
AML3D Limited (ASX:AL3) has won an approximately $2.2 million order from Northrop Grumman Marine Systems, marking the Australian metal additive manufacturing company's first order with the US defence prime. The announcement does not specify the currency of the contract value.
The large-scale ARCEMY X system was selected through a competitive tender to support manufacturing for the US Navy submarine industrial base. It will be installed at Northrop Grumman's Sunnyvale, California facility, with AML3D supplying the equipment from its technology centre in Stow, Ohio.
Order expands AML3D's US defence footprint
The contract arrives as AML3D carries a growing US defence pipeline into FY27, including the US defence order book that was reported at $16.8 million earlier this month. The new Northrop Grumman engagement adds another major prime contractor to a customer base that already includes Newport News Shipbuilding, Austal USA, Cogitic and Laser Welding Solutions.
AML3D said it now has contracts in place covering 17 ARCEMY systems in the US. That figure is a measure of contracted systems rather than a disclosed total of installed or revenue-generating machines, but it signals the scale of the company's stated effort to embed its technology in the US Navy Marine Industrial Base supply chain.
Milestones run through FY27 installation
Payment terms provide for 50% of the order value when the initial project milestone is completed, followed by further milestone payments through final installation. Installation is expected in the fourth quarter of AML3D's 2027 financial year, leaving delivery, commissioning and the timing of subsequent payments as the next practical markers for the project.
The order also includes two years of maintenance and services. AML3D has not disclosed the contract's profit margin or detailed revenue-recognition schedule, so the headline value alone does not establish its earnings contribution. The more immediate strategic test is whether this first Northrop Grumman system leads to additional orders across the prime's submarine and naval manufacturing programs.
Bottom Line?
The contract strengthens AML3D's US defence credentials, but delivery milestones and follow-on orders will determine how much of the opportunity becomes recurring commercial scale.
Questions in the middle?
- How quickly will AML3D convert the initial Northrop Grumman engagement into further ARCEMY system orders?
- When will the 50% milestone payment and subsequent project receipts be recognised in AML3D's financial results?
- What margin and recurring services revenue will the two-year maintenance package contribute?
