FireFly finds new copper-gold system near Green Bay processing plant

Mining By Maxwell Dee 6 min read

FireFly Metals has struck a new copper-gold VMS system at Mount Joy, delivering a 22.5-metre intersection grading 2.5% copper equivalent near its Green Bay infrastructure in Newfoundland. A second hole encountered about 40 metres of semi-massive sulphides, although laboratory assays are still pending.

  • 22.5m at 2.5% CuEq, including 9m at 3.9% CuEq
  • Follow-up hole intersected approximately 40m of semi-massive sulphides
  • Mount Joy sits 2.6km from the Nugget Pond processing facility
  • Three rigs will continue regional drilling through the remainder of 2026
  • Updated resource and feasibility study targeted for Q1 2027

Mount Joy delivers a substantial first hit

FireFly Metals Ltd (ASX:FFM, TSX:FFM) has made a new copper-gold discovery at Mount Joy, adding an unexpected regional success to the development story at its Green Bay project in Newfoundland, Canada. The first hole to test the main electromagnetic anomaly, FFR26-071, intersected 22.5 metres at 2.5% copper equivalent from 109 metres, including a higher-grade nine-metre section at 3.9% CuEq.

The reported 22.5-metre interval contained 1.87% copper, 0.64 grams per tonne gold and 0.38% zinc. The higher-grade section ran at 2.95% copper and 0.95g/t gold. FireFly calculated the copper-equivalent figures using assumed long-term prices and recovery factors, including 95% copper recovery, 85% recovery for gold and silver, and 50% for zinc.

The result follows an earlier Mount Joy hole, FFR26-064, which returned 6.5 metres at 2.0% CuEq from just 15.6 metres. FireFly says the mineralisation comprises massive sulphide, mainly pyrite with chalcopyrite and sphalerite, underlain by copper-gold-bearing stringer mineralisation. Those features are described as consistent with a well-developed volcanogenic massive sulphide system.

A second sulphide zone awaits laboratory confirmation

Follow-up hole FFR26-076 intersected approximately 40 metres of semi-massive sulphides between 240 and 280 metres downhole, with further pyrite-chalcopyrite stringer mineralisation continuing beyond 400 metres. The hole was drilled from the same platform as FFR26-071 and appears to have tested a footwall sequence separated from the first intersection by an interpreted fault.

That visual result is potentially important but remains unassayed. FireFly says laboratory results are expected in about four weeks, and explicitly cautions that visual estimates of sulphide abundance are not a substitute for assays or evidence of economic grades. Downhole electromagnetic work has also identified additional off-hole conductors for future drilling, giving the company several follow-up targets rather than a single isolated intercept.

Discovery sits close to existing Green Bay infrastructure

Mount Joy is about 35 kilometres from the Ming Mine and only 2.6 kilometres from FireFly’s Nugget Pond processing facility, which is currently on care and maintenance. The prospect lies along the same prospective volcanic sequence as the historic Tilt Cove copper mine, a setting FireFly is now testing with its first drilling program in the Tilt Cove-Betts Cove district.

The discovery arrives as FireFly moves Green Bay from resource definition towards a development decision. The company’s Green Bay resource expansion and development test had already established 60.2 million tonnes of Measured and Indicated resources at 2.43% CuEq, alongside 23.5Mt of Inferred resources at 2.51% CuEq. FireFly says regional discoveries such as Mount Joy could add deposits to the production profiles examined in its recently released PEA, though no resource or reserve has yet been defined at Mount Joy.

Regional drilling runs alongside the mine studies

Three surface rigs will continue regional exploration through the remainder of 2026, with results still pending from Mount Joy and other targets including Tilt Cove and Nash. FireFly has budgeted C$16.7 million for regional programs in financial year 2027 and plans a winter access road from Nugget Pond to support track-mounted drilling at Mount Joy in 2027.

The company also plans a maiden Inferred Mineral Resource Estimate for Main Mine, less than three kilometres from Ming, in the first quarter of 2027. An updated Green Bay resource estimate and feasibility study are targeted for the same quarter, while a Final Investment Decision is expected in mid-2027. FireFly reported approximately A$368 million in pro-forma cash and liquid investments as at 31 July 2026, including proceeds from its recent equity raising and share purchase plan.

The immediate test is whether assays from FFR26-076 convert the visually impressive sulphide zone into a coherent, grade-bearing extension. Until then, Mount Joy is a promising exploration discovery close to useful infrastructure, not yet an addition to Green Bay’s mine plan.

Bottom Line?

Mount Joy strengthens Green Bay’s exploration pipeline, but its strategic value will depend on pending assays, follow-up drilling and whether the discovery can support a resource before the 2027 feasibility study is finalised.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will assays from FFR26-076 confirm economic copper and gold grades across the visually logged sulphide interval?
  • Can the off-hole conductors and planned winter drilling establish sufficient continuity for a Mount Joy resource estimate?
  • Will any regional discoveries be incorporated into the updated Green Bay resource and feasibility study without delaying the mid-2027 investment decision?
