Barton Gold finds more depth in Challenger restart story

Barton Gold has more than doubled the reported Challenger underground resource to 230koz of gold at 3.65 g/t, lifting its combined Challenger and Tarcoola resource base to about 400koz. The upgrade strengthens the case for a restart built around the permitted Central Gawler Mill, although most of the new underground ounces remain Inferred and are not Ore Reserves.

  • Challenger underground resource rises to 230koz at 3.65 g/t gold
  • Total Challenger resource reaches 370koz, up from 313koz
  • Tarcoola stockpile resource upgraded to Indicated classification
  • Challenger 3 adds a new open-pittable deposit along strike
  • DFS for a potential restart targeted for Q1 2027

Challenger Underground Resource More Than Doubles

Barton Gold Holdings Limited (ASX:BGD) has uncovered a more valuable underground story at its South Australian Challenger mine, with the reported resource more than doubling to 230koz of gold grading 3.65 g/t. The figure combines 207koz above the 215mRL level with a further 23koz in the deeper resource below 90mRL.

The upgrade lifts Challenger’s total JORC (2012) Mineral Resource to 370koz, comprising 11.2 million tonnes at 1.03 g/t. That compares with 313koz in the September 2025 estimate. The result builds on the September Challenger resource update, which reported the earlier 313koz resource, and adds a newly defined Challenger 3 deposit along strike from the existing Main and West open pits.

Challenger 3 contributes 8koz at 0.84 g/t, including 6koz in the Indicated category. Barton says infill and extension drilling could expand the deposit and convert additional low-risk mineralisation into Indicated Resources. The company also plans further drilling at the Challenger SSW and Main open pits, where it says recent work has confirmed high-grade zones in pit walls.

Across Challenger and nearby Tarcoola, Barton now reports about 400koz of gold. Tarcoola’s estimate has edged down to 29koz from 30koz, but the quality of the estimate has improved: stockpiled material has moved from Inferred to Indicated classification. Barton says 169koz of the combined resource is open-pittable, including fresh mineralisation and material in the Challenger tailings storage facilities.

Central Gawler Mill Remains the Development Anchor

The resource uplift arrives as Barton works through a Definitive Feasibility Study for a potential Challenger restart using the fully permitted Central Gawler Mill. The initial Stage 1 concept targets a three-to-four-year baseline operation using higher-grade material from the TSF1 tailings facility and limited near-surface feed, without disturbing the historical high-grade underground mine.

Barton says its technical work has found the mill suitable for recommissioning and that TSF1 reprocessing is technically feasible and operationally practical. A broader restart could eventually draw on Challenger, Tarcoola, Wudinna and Tolmer, although the filing does not provide a final capital cost, operating plan or production decision. The DFS is targeted for publication in the first quarter of calendar 2027.

Resource Confidence Still Sets the Limits

The headline ounces come with important qualifications. Of Challenger’s 370koz, 222koz are Inferred, including most of the underground inventory. The technical report says the estimate is a global resource suitable for scoping-level studies, not a local mine schedule, because Challenger’s particulate gold, historical sampling and assay methods create significant imprecision.

The resource is also not an Ore Reserve and does not demonstrate economic viability. Barton is preparing an expedited review of underground development options, while further drilling is intended to improve confidence in Challenger 3, the open pits and the underground mineralisation. The key test is whether the newly modelled ounces can survive tighter drilling, mine planning and cost analysis.

Bottom Line?

The resource upgrade materially expands Challenger’s restart options, but the next value test is conversion of Inferred underground ounces into mineable, economically supported inventory through drilling and the Q1 2027 DFS.

Questions in the middle?

  • How much of the 230koz underground resource can be converted from Inferred to Indicated classification?
  • Will the DFS support a restart based only on tailings and near-surface feed, or require underground development?
  • What capital and operating costs will emerge once mill recommissioning and mining scenarios are finalised?
