Firebird reaches 5N purity as Perth battery plant moves toward commissioning

Firebird Metals has secured its first A$1 million ARENA payment and produced 99.999% manganese sulphate as work advances on its Perth demonstration plant. The next test is whether the company can reproduce those results with Oakover ore and move from pilot validation to customer-ready samples.

  • A$1 million ARENA milestone payment received
  • 99.999% 5N manganese sulphate produced after quarter-end
  • First ADP equipment container shipped from China
  • Independent testing confirmed more than 99.99% HPMSM
  • A$3.3 million cash balance and 5.47 quarters of funding on current spending

5N manganese sulphate raises the technology stakes

Firebird Metals Limited (ASX:FRB) ended the September quarter with its most commercially suggestive technical milestone yet: production of 99.999% or “5N” ultra-high-purity manganese sulphate at its Hunan pilot plant. The result came after quarter-end, on 19 October, and Firebird says most impurities were below lower detection limits. The company also says it is the only Western company to have manufactured 5N manganese sulphate, although that claim remains a company assertion rather than an independently established industry ranking. The result extends the company’s 5N manganese milestone, which was reported earlier this month alongside the start of Oakover ore testing.

Firebird says 5N material commands an approximate 33% price premium over standard battery-grade manganese sulphate because of its scarcity. That premium is not yet revenue: the Perth Australian Demonstration Plant remains under construction, and customer qualification and independent validation still lie ahead.

The physical build also advanced during the quarter. Firebird moved into its Osborne Park facility, appointed chemical engineer Dr Chris Passmore as Technical Lead and shipped the first container of plant equipment from China. The vessel was expected to reach Fremantle in late October, with assembly targeted for the fourth quarter of calendar 2026 and commissioning and first production targeted for the first quarter of 2027.

Feedstock preparation has begun in parallel. Ore from Firebird’s 100%-owned Oakover Manganese Project was crushed, wet-milled, screened, dried and homogenised for demonstration-scale processing, following the Oakover feedstock preparation previously reported. A representative sample is being processed in Hunan during an October technical program, with the same work intended to form the first experimental campaign at Osborne Park. The key question is whether the high-purity result can be reproduced using Australian ore rather than pilot-plant feedstock.

ARENA funding supports the next build phase

Firebird completed all deliverables for Milestone 1 under its A$2 million Australian Renewable Energy Agency Battery Breakthrough Initiative grant ahead of schedule and within budget. ARENA approved the milestone on 17 July, releasing the first A$1 million non-dilutive payment. The company says a further A$1 million is expected as additional assembly and commissioning milestones are achieved, with the grant giving ARENA no rights to Firebird’s current or future intellectual property. The payment follows the Perth plant equipment orders and helps fund the transition into on-site construction.

Firebird’s technology received other forms of validation during the period. Independent international customer testing confirmed high-purity manganese sulphate above 99.99%, with key impurity levels reported below Chinese industry standards. Separately, independent electrochemical testing put the company’s lithium manganese-rich cathode material at 263.7 mAh/g at 0.1C and 211.2 mAh/g at 1C, in line with commercially sourced reference material. Firebird says further work is needed to improve cycle life and commercial performance before the LMR process is demonstrated at the ADP.

Cash runway remains tied to construction pace

Firebird held A$3.317 million in cash at 30 September, down from A$3.607 million three months earlier. Operating activities used A$594,000, while A$660,000 was spent on Australian demonstration plant equipment. The A$1 million ARENA receipt left investing cash flow positive for the quarter, masking the underlying cost of advancing the project.

Using its current expenditure profile, Firebird calculates 5.47 quarters of available funding. That estimate will be tested as further equipment arrives, assembly accelerates and commissioning begins. The immediate catalysts are the remaining equipment shipments, the Oakover processing results, independent testing of the resulting samples, further ARENA payments and evidence of customer qualification. Until those steps are completed, 5N purity remains an encouraging pilot result rather than proof of commercial-scale production.

Bottom Line?

Firebird has cleared several technical and funding gates, but the investment case now turns on reproducing 5N purity with Oakover ore and commissioning the Perth plant without materially increasing cash pressure.

Questions in the middle?

  • Can Firebird independently reproduce 5N manganese sulphate using Oakover ore and Australian demonstration-plant equipment?
  • Will customer qualification convert the reported purity and LMR performance into commercial partnerships or offtake opportunities?
  • How quickly will assembly and commissioning spending consume the reported 5.47 quarters of funding?
