AMP rejects undisclosed-information explanation
AMP Limited (ASX:AMP) has denied knowing of any undisclosed information that could explain the day’s abrupt trading, after the ASX queried a move in its shares from an intraday high of $2.51 to a low of $2.22 on 2 November, alongside a significant increase in volume.
In its response, AMP said it was complying with the ASX Listing Rules, including the continuous disclosure obligations under Listing Rule 3.1. The company’s reply was authorised by its Market Disclosure Committee, closing out the immediate exchange inquiry without identifying a hidden corporate event.
China Life pension result offers a possible explanation
AMP instead pointed to a 30 October solvency report from China Life Pension Company, or CLPC, which showed third-quarter 2026 net profit below the prior corresponding period. AMP said the result may have contributed to the market activity and had been noted in Australian sell-side analyst reports released on 2 November.
The disclosure matters because AMP owns 19.99% of CLPC and records its share of the earnings within a broader partnerships portfolio that also includes CLAMP and PCCP. China partnerships had already featured prominently in AMP’s first-half result, when the company reported that their NPAT contribution had doubled, as described in the China partnerships result.
FY26 partnerships guidance remains intact
AMP said the CLPC update does not change its FY26 guidance for partnerships, which calls for a combined annualised return on investment of 12% to 15%, subject to market conditions. The company did not quantify the effect of CLPC’s lower profit on AMP’s earnings or on the partnerships portfolio.
That leaves the market with a narrower answer than a full earnings update: AMP has identified a plausible public factor behind the volatility, but has not established that it caused the move or detailed its financial effect. The next useful test will be whether subsequent earnings disclosures put numbers around CLPC’s contribution and whether the 12-15% guidance survives the remainder of FY26.
Bottom Line?
AMP has contained the immediate disclosure question, but the financial significance of CLPC’s weaker quarter remains unquantified.
Questions in the middle?
- How much did CLPC’s lower third-quarter profit affect AMP’s partnerships earnings?
- Will AMP maintain the 12-15% annualised partnerships ROI guidance through FY26?
- Was the CLPC update the principal driver of AMP’s share-price volatility, or merely one factor?
