Rua Gold clears next permitting gate for Auld Creek mine proposal
Rua Gold has submitted the substantive fast-track application for its proposed underground Auld Creek gold-antimony mine in New Zealand’s Reefton Goldfield. The milestone moves the project into statutory review, but it is not an approval and the company’s mid-2027 permitting target remains conditional.
- Substantive fast-track application submitted for Auld Creek
- Application covers environmental, technical, social and economic assessments
- Completeness checks must be passed before an expert panel is formed
- Mid-2027 permitting target remains subject to reviews and appeals
- Pre-feasibility study and financing still stand between application and development

Rua Gold has moved Auld Creek from fast-track eligibility into the substantive assessment stage, submitting the application for its proposed underground gold-antimony mine in New Zealand’s Reefton Goldfield. It is the clearest regulatory milestone yet for a project the company says could help bring gold and antimony production back to the West Coast.
Auld Creek Enters Substantive Fast-Track Review
The submission follows Auld Creek referral approval, which allowed Rua Gold to prepare the more detailed application under New Zealand’s Fast-track Approvals Act 2024. The company said the package consolidates work by its team and independent advisers covering water quality, ecology, landscape and visual effects, air quality, traffic, geochemistry, erosion and sediment control, mine closure, and social and economic considerations.
The application will first face statutory checks for completeness and scope. If it meets those requirements, an independent expert panel will be formed to assess the proposal and determine whether approvals should be granted, and on what conditions. That makes the submission an important step in the process, but not permission to build or operate the mine.
Permitting Target Remains Conditional
Rua Gold retains a target of securing permits by mid-2027, although the company expressly qualifies that timetable. Requests for further information, potential suspensions, the assessment itself and any appeals could affect the schedule. The company also intends to continue engagement with Ngāti Waewae, local communities, councils, regulators and other stakeholders as the design develops.
The timing matters because the filing places regulatory progress alongside the company’s ongoing technical work. Rua Gold is advancing a pre-feasibility study on the proposed mining and processing approach, with any development decision still dependent on the study results, the necessary approvals, financing and a final investment decision. The release provides no project economics, production estimates or financing terms.
Technical and Financing Gates Still Remain
Chief executive Robert Eckford said the project had potential to anchor a wider Reefton operation, create skilled employment and support local businesses while addressing a global antimony supply deficit. Those are company ambitions rather than outcomes established by the application. For shareholders, the more immediate test is whether the submission passes completeness checks and how the expert-panel process treats the proposed mine’s environmental and community effects.
Bottom Line?
The application removes one permitting hurdle, but Auld Creek remains exposed to review, appeals, study results and the eventual financing decision.
Questions in the middle?
- Will the substantive application pass completeness checks without material requests for additional information?
- What conditions, if any, could an expert panel attach to approvals for the underground mine and infrastructure?
- Will the pre-feasibility study support development on terms that can attract the required financing?
