Exploration stocks delivered the biggest price swings, while producers and developers made steady progress on mines, funding and takeovers. Investors rewarded high-grade discoveries in some names but punished weak cash positions, uncertain studies and untested commercial claims.
- Kaoko Metals (ASX:KAO) fell 57.51% despite reporting broad copper-silver drilling results.
- Freehill Mining (ASX:FHS) rose 50.00% after record aggregate sales and fresh funding for Chilean projects.
- Gulf Stream Energy (ASX:GSE) dropped 40.00% after identifying oil from logs without flow testing.
- Gold drilling drove gains for Haranga Resources (ASX:HAR), Horizon Gold (ASX:HRN) and Many Peaks Minerals (ASX:MPK).
- Large projects advanced at Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS), KGL Resources (ASX:KGL), Grange Resources (ASX:GRR) and Auric Mining (ASX:AWJ).
Kaoko Metals (ASX:KAO) recorded the week’s largest move, falling 57.51%. The company reported wide copper and silver intersections at Otniel, but the early results did not prove the width, continuity or processing quality of the mineralisation. Gulf Stream Energy (ASX:GSE) also fell 40.00% after finding oil signs in two zones at its Louisiana well. The oil has not been flow-tested, so investors still do not know whether it can produce at a commercial rate. At the other end of the list, Freehill Mining (ASX:FHS) rose 50.00% after reporting record September sales and raising money for its Chilean operations.
Exploration delivered big results, but prices did not always follow
Gold explorers produced several strong drilling results. Haranga Resources (ASX:HAR) climbed 35.71% after reporting 32 metres at 10.4 grams of gold per tonne at Lincoln. One metre graded 51.4 grams. The interval is measured down the drill hole, not necessarily across the full thickness of the deposit. More drilling is needed before the result can change the project’s estimated size.
Horizon Gold (ASX:HRN) rose 8.82% after finding 44 metres at 5.08 grams of gold per tonne at Snook. Many Peaks Minerals (ASX:MPK) added 5.77% after drilling 188.9 metres at 3.58 grams at Ferké. These results sit below or beyond existing estimates. The next step is to test whether the mineralisation joins together in a shape that could support mining.
Not every discovery attracted buyers. Solstice Minerals (ASX:SLS) fell 19.41% despite broad copper intersections at Nanadie. Core Lithium (ASX:CXO) fell 16.33% even after producing its first spodumene concentrate at Finniss. Investors may have wanted evidence of a reliable restart and a shipment, rather than an early commissioning milestone.
Mine plans moved closer to construction
Pilgangoora owner Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS) approved its A$1.9 billion P2000 expansion. The plan aims to lift production to about two million tonnes of lithium concentrate a year by 2029. The company also increased its ore reserve by 31%. Its share price still fell 14.86% for the week. The fall shows that a larger mine does not guarantee a higher share price when investors are weighing a large capital bill and weak lithium prices.
Grange Resources (ASX:GRR) approved a A$287 million underground mine at Savage River. The plan targets production until at least 2035 and a 43% project return before financing costs. KGL Resources (ASX:KGL) also approved full development of Jervois, with first copper concentrate targeted for the first half of 2028. Auric Mining (ASX:AWJ) secured a processing plant for A$1.2 million and is targeting Munda mining in late 2027, subject to approvals.
Producers with stronger recent results also made progress. Aurelia Metals (ASX:AMI) increased annual revenue by 40% and net profit by 69% after Federation entered commercial production. Aeris Resources (ASX:AIS) finished the year with A$178.5 million in net profit and no material debt. Evolution Mining (ASX:EVN) generated A$466 million in mine cash flow during the September quarter and kept its full-year production plan unchanged.
Cash and deal terms remained central
Matsa Resources (ASX:MAT) moved closer to receiving the final A$45 million from AngloGold Ashanti after satisfying the deal conditions. The payment is expected within 15 business days. Matsa still faces a dispute that halted Devon mining, administration of subsidiaries and a going-concern warning. In simple terms, the company needs the transaction money to support its balance sheet and repay debt.
Elsewhere, Maronan Metals (ASX:MMA) secured firm commitments for a A$20 million placement to speed up drilling and its detailed feasibility study. Ballard Mining (ASX:BM1) raised A$45 million for Mt Ida resource drilling and development work. Deep Yellow (ASX:DYL), however, withdrew its fourth-quarter 2026 investment decision target for Tumas because market conditions made new funding difficult.
Takeover activity also shaped the week. Forrestania Resources (ASX:FRS) reached a 58.54% relevant interest in Zenith Minerals (ASX:ZNC), while Zenith continued to support the offer despite a lower implied value. Cygnus Metals (ASX:CY5) moved towards implementation of its Central Asia Metals deal after court approval. CZR Resources (ASX:CZR) declared its offer for Zuleika Gold best and final after reaching 72.45% voting power.
Bottom Line?
The next several weeks will test whether reported discoveries become larger mineral estimates, whether new funding reaches construction and whether announced deals complete. Key dates include Matsa’s expected AngloGold payment within 15 business days, Cygnus Metals’ planned 27 October implementation, Forrestania’s 12 November takeover deadline and first ore at Edna May targeted for mid-December 2026.
Questions in the middle?
- Can Kaoko Metals prove that its copper-silver hits continue beyond the first two drill holes?
- Will Deep Yellow secure a new funding plan and investment decision date for Tumas?
- Can Matsa use the expected AngloGold payment to resolve its debt and Devon-related financial pressure?
