El Dorado’s first Guyana assays offer clues beneath historic gold workings

El Dorado Goldfields has begun testing a 180km² Guyana land package after securing an option to acquire a 90% interest in the Oko North and Oko South projects. Early rock-chip assays reached 2.32 g/t gold, but the greenfields projects remain undrilled and have no defined resources or reserves.

  • Option to acquire 90% of 180km² Oko North and Oko South projects
  • Rock-chip assays returned four results above 1 g/t gold, peaking at 2.32 g/t
  • About 5,000 soil samples planned across the Guyana tenure
  • A$5 million placement supports exploration and growth initiatives
  • A$3.46 million cash balance at 30 September 2026

Early Gold Assays Put El Dorado’s Guyana Pivot to the Test

El Dorado Goldfields Ltd (ASX:EDO) has found early signs of hard-rock gold mineralisation on its new Guyana ground, with first-pass rock-chip assays reaching 2.32 g/t gold. Four samples exceeded 1 g/t, including results of 1.94 g/t, 1.45 g/t and 1.08 g/t, giving the former Liberty Metals a tangible exploration signal as it reshapes itself around the Oko Gold District.

The results are encouraging, but they are not yet a discovery in the resource-definition sense. The samples were collected from exposed veins and other surface locations, and the company has not estimated a Mineral Resource or Ore Reserve across the projects. Rock-chip grades also do not establish the width, continuity or economic potential of mineralisation at depth.

A Large Guyana Land Package With an Option, Not Ownership

During the September quarter, El Dorado entered a binding agreement giving it a four-year option to acquire a 90% interest in Oko North and Oko South. The package covers about 180 square kilometres across 40 granted mining permits in Guyana’s Cuyuni Mining District, with maximum consideration of approximately US$8 million before milestone payments. Exercising the option remains subject to regulatory approvals and other conditions under Guyanese mining law.

Oko North directly abuts ground associated with the Oko deposits now held by G Mining Ventures after its acquisition of G2 Goldfields. Oko South sits about 30 kilometres south of those deposits. El Dorado says the two blocks lie along an interpreted structural trend within the Guiana Shield, but it also explicitly cautions that nearby discoveries and geological similarities do not guarantee exploration success on its own tenure.

Five Thousand Soil Samples Will Shape the Next Targets

Field teams began mapping, structural interpretation, rock sampling and geochemical planning soon after the agreement was signed. Reconnaissance at Oko North identified artisanal workings, visible gold, quartz veining, shearing and hydrothermal alteration, while the company says coarse, angular gold in creek sediments may point towards a nearby hard-rock source. Those visual observations are qualitative and require assay confirmation.

The immediate work programme is more systematic: roughly 5,000 soil samples across Oko North and Oko South, supported by portable XRF and DetectORE technology. El Dorado also plans airborne magnetic and radiometric surveys, followed by trenching and target definition before a maiden drilling programme. The next quarter’s results should therefore provide a better test of whether the surface indications form coherent anomalies rather than isolated occurrences.

Capital and Technical Team Rebuilt Around the Oko Strategy

The company raised A$5 million through a placement priced at A$0.0025 a share, issuing 2 billion shares in two tranches. At 30 September, cash and cash equivalents stood at A$3.46 million, after A$1.70 million of payments for tenements and A$253,000 of exploration and evaluation expenditure during the quarter. The Appendix 5B indicated approximately 5.6 quarters of funding based on the reported spending run rate, although an accelerated exploration campaign could alter that calculation.

El Dorado has also added Guyana experience to both its board and field team. Former IAMGOLD President and CEO Steve Letwin and Guiana Shield geologist Travis Schwertfeger joined as non-executive directors, while former G2 Goldfields exploration executive Boaz Wade joined the technical team alongside Exploration Manager Finlay Goodwin. The appointments bring relevant experience, but the value of that expertise will ultimately be measured by target quality, drilling results and the company’s ability to convert the option into a lasting project interest.

Bottom Line?

The surface assays provide a useful starting signal, but soil anomalies, drilling and the unresolved 90% option will determine whether the Guyana pivot becomes more than an exploration narrative.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will the planned soil and airborne surveys identify continuous anomalies across the two widely separated project blocks?
  • Can follow-up trenching and maiden drilling confirm that the surface gold is linked to substantial hard-rock mineralisation?
  • What regulatory, milestone and funding requirements must El Dorado satisfy before securing the proposed 90% project interest?
